High Precision Elemental Analysis Using an ED-XRF Spectrometer

Traditionally, high-power wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WD-XRF) has been the main laboratory method for elemental analysis for high precision analyses. That’s because these instruments typically provide the sensitivity and stability necessary to analyze major and minor elements in samples like cement, slag, refractory products, geological applications, and many more.

However, new developments in excitation and detector technology now enable a new generation of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) spectrometers to offer comparable precision and accuracy at a substantially lower investment and operating cost.

Learn how the new ED-XRF instruments are designed to offer precision previously only possible using WD-XRF. Examples of several specific applications and analytical results will be presented. Additionally, suggestions on how to select a new ED-XRF instrument—what to look for and what to avoid—will be discussed.
